How to choose the right business coach for you

How to choose the right business coach

There are lots of business coaches out there who can help you get established and grow.

So how do you choose one? You have to ask yourself some key questions before you make your choice.

What’s your budget?

This is very important – the cost of business coaches ranges from nothing to hundreds of pounds per month. Do you have enough to spend to take on someone who would be useful to your business? It’s pointless taking on a coach you can’t really afford, or taking on someone who won’t suit your business simply because they’re cheap.

Check out what’s on offer from services like Business Wales who offer seminars and sessions free to small business, and who can put you in touch with a mentor.

What are your goals?

Do you want to grow or restructure your business? Do you have a specific problem – like learning how to manage staff for the first time or pitching to publicly-funded bodies? Choose a coach who has experience of working in the areas you need to focus on to achieve those goals. Examine their websites and look for relevant case studies.

What’s holding you back from achieving them?

Is it a lack of funds, or a lack of confidence? In the case of the former, there are a number of business coaches who have a background in finance who would be best placed to help you. If it’s the latter, there are a number of coaches who are both life and business coaches who are used to bringing out the best in people using different techniques.

Do you need a coach or a mentor?

For some people, a coach who will hold them accountable and help set strategy is the best thing for their business. For others, what they need is someone who has been on the same journey and who can give them the benefit of their experience. What they need is a mentor – someone who will offer them moral support and a helping hand. Look for free programmes which pair up start-ups and small businesses with mentors.
